I’m a refugee from the media salt mines, too. But I was living the dream, working mainly for libertarian-adjacent publications. After two decades of getting assignments and then spending the most recent dozen years shoveling copy and (mostly) rewriting other people’s stuff to meet my standards, I had to break out and speak for myself. The chance to move to Substack was a godsend. A terrifying godsend.
It would tickle me if I never again had to punch the metaphorical clock in another person's office. We’ll see if I can build enough of an audience to make that happen. I’m working on that, figuring out my niche and how to find readers who want to learn about it.
If it doesn’t work out, I’ll still be able to say Substack gave me an opportunity that didn’t exist not so long ago.

I look forward to following your journey, too.
