Sunday Morning Reads - 2/21/21
I want to start this week’s edition with a few oldies but goodies that I still think about often:
In 2015, Alana Massey wrote a treatise against the idea of Chill in romantic relationships. If anything, the issue has gotten worse since then, and therefore a re-reading of Massey’s essay is needed.
Back in 2014, Caity Weaver wrote about her quest to test the endlessness of TGI Friday’s Endless Apps (remember those days?). Not only is Weaver damn hilarious, but this piece is also one of the best examples of the “I did X for Y amount of time” style of essay.
Since I am a firm believer that herd immunity to COVID will happen sooner rather than later -- and based on that belief I predict the second half of 2021 will be a bacchanalia -- I want to bring back Amanda Mull’s 2017 essay on the concept of “boyfriend dick”
Thank you for indulging me in my trip down memory lane, if you liked it let me know, maybe I’ll make that a regular feature here on Sunday Morning Reads.
Now, on to a few pieces from this week:
Sydney Ember describes what she has termed “The Boredom Economy”, looking into the online buying habits of those of us who have a little bit of extra money and a whole lot more free time during the pandemic (yes Wall Street Bets makes an appearance in here).
Nicholas Grossman looks into the Gina Carano firing controversy and wonders if this was really a case of an actor getting fired for being conservative (I’m torn on this particular case myself).
J.D. Tuccille points out how politics has picked peoples’ brains to the point where it is the primary motivating factor in what should be non-political decisions.
Spotify has announced their “work from anywhere” program, which will allow all of its employees to choose the workspace best for them while retaining their NYC / San Francisco salaries, in contrast to companies like Facebook and Redfin who have announced they will base employees’ salaries on their location. Opening shots in the talent wars, they have made.
I hope you guys had a decent week and are having a relaxing Sunday, I’ll see you guys in the next post!
(possible preview -- I want to discuss a particular online controversy but from a more personal angle than I usually take….)
